I'm with hairy, Ashton was the real deal - I always saw him as shearer and sheringham combined, in that he could play the target man or the withdrawn role finding space. Really intelligent player, made up for his lack of pace with brilliantly quick feet, great movement and strength.
The thought of payet whipping balls into the box for him instead of zaza is depressing!

I agree the word ' Easily' is a bit far fetched, I was always a big Tony Cottee fan myself.
Ashton would have had to fly to the moon and have scored 100 goals in two seasons to be seen as better by many than Geoff Hurst.

What a sad curtailing of a great talent.
You can tell he was just one of those blokes who lived for football, rather than the trappings and lifestyle which went along with it. Twice the pro most of the current England lot are.

He would have been playing for Man Utd most likely.
Once he was in the England squad we would have cashed in.
And the barman former footballer W Rooney would have been serving him drinks in the England hotel as he entertained the wedding party with some virtuoso piano tunes.
